Summary

The Waveshare adapter converts HDMI signals into CSI signals so that HDMI cameras can be used like standard CSI cameras across the Raspberry Pi series. It supports input up to 1080p at 30 fps via the TC358743XBG controller.

Technical overview

  • Controller chip: TC358743XBG
  • Input video: HDMI 1.4, RGB888, up to 1080p@30fps
  • Input audio: HDMI audio
  • Output video: 2-lane MIPI CSI-2
  • Output audio: I2S output in LPCM format
  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V
  • Operating temperature: -30 °C to 70 °C
  • Compatible with all Raspberry Pi generations; CSI port location varies by model (Pi 2B/3B/3B+, Pi 4B, Pi Zero)
  • Audio requires a separately prepared cable and soldering; pads on the adapter side connect to the I2S pins (WFS/PIN35, SCK/PIN12, SD/PIN38)
  • Configuration is done via /boot/config.txt and /boot/cmdline.txt; cma=96M is added
  • libcamera driver support is not available
  • Video capture is possible with yavta or GStreamer
  • For screen extension to the Pi only 720p is currently supported
  • Raspberry Pi 5: frame drop issue during capture due to system version limitations

Notes and version constraints

  • The driver does not support HDCP-protected content.
  • The sound card ID may differ per system; hw:2 must match the actual ID.
  • On Raspberry Pi 5, frame drops occur during capture due to system version limitations.
  • Screen extension currently supports only 720p; the dtoverlay lines must be removed and Legacy Camera enabled.
  • For Pi 5, /boot/firmware/config.txt is used instead of /boot/config.txt.
  • The connected device must provide the supported resolution, otherwise capture will not work correctly.
