Summary

The Waveshare CM4-DUAL-ETH-BASE is a base board for the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4. It provides three USB 3.2 Gen1 ports, two Gigabit Ethernet ports (one native to the CM4 and one via a USB Gigabit LAN chip), a wide-range 7–36 V DC power input, plus interfaces for cameras, displays, and cooling.

Technical overview

  • Compatible with all variants of the Compute Module 4; the socket supports both Lite and eMMC versions.
  • Two RJ45 Gigabit ports: ETHERNET 0 uses the CM4's native network port, while ETHERNET 1 is provided through the RTL8153 USB Gigabit LAN chip.
  • Three USB 3.2 Gen1 ports for peripheral devices.
  • Two HDMI ports supporting 4K@30fps output.
  • Dual MIPI CSI camera connectors (CAM0/CAM1) and a MIPI DSI display connector (DISP1).
  • Wide-range DC power input from 7 to 36 V; at least 18 W is recommended for normal CM4 operation.
  • Fan header with an EMC2301 controller for speed regulation and measurement.
  • RTC connector (PCF85063A) on I²C bus 10 at address 0x51; the fan controller shares that bus at address 0x2f.
  • Jumper switches to disable Bluetooth/WiFi, select boot mode (without eMMC or TF), and choose logic voltage (3.3 V or 1.8 V).
  • Versions: V1 (initial), V2 (20220518, DSI changed from DSI0 to DSI1), V3 (20220527, added common-mode inductors for EMI improvement, CE certified).

Notes and version constraints

  • Plugging or unplugging any device other than USB and HDMI is prohibited while powered on.
  • Before connecting a fan, confirm its rated voltage matches the connected voltage; default is 12 V (resistor FAN_VCC must be re-soldered when switching to 5 V).
  • The Type-C port is only a USB slave for flashing images and must not be used as a power source; no other devices may be connected during image writing.
  • This expansion board does not support PoE.
  • When using the RTC, DSI and CSI interfaces are disabled.
  • All config.txt changes require a reboot to take effect.
  • If the fan does not spin after adding the driver: check kernel version (at least 6.1.31); older kernels will not work.
  • If the RTC value is inaccurate or invalid: verify the CR1220 battery connection and voltage.
  • HDMI output: With a DSI display connected, HDMI is disabled; plugging into either HDMI port restores output, but with two monitors only HDMI0 produces an image.
