Technical overview

  • Base module: SIM868 (Simcom), a pure 2G module without 3G/4G support
  • Compatibility: Raspberry Pi 4B, 3B, 2B, Zero, Zero W
  • Interfaces: USB-to-UART connection; optional use of the Raspberry Pi USB port by setting the jumper to position A (on Pi 4B use the USB 3.0 port)
  • Power control switch: The new HAT allows program-controlled on/off via pin P4; older versions only via button
  • GNSS function: The RTC battery is exclusively for GNSS warm start, not for storing time or parameters
  • Headset connector: 4-pin national standard (OMTP); US standard CTIA may cause malfunction
  • Prerequisite for operation: Availability of a 2G network in the deployment area and a SIM card from an operator that still runs 2G
  • Documentation: Available resources include user manual, schematic, source code, PWRKEY script, 3D drawing and firmware upgrade tool

Notes and version constraints

  • No AT commands are explicitly listed in the source document – the command list must be taken from the SIM800 Series AT Command Manual
  • APN configuration: Depending on the carrier, APN, username and password may need to be set; exact values depend on the operator
  • Network registration fails although the SIM works in a phone: check whether the SIM actually supports GSM services
  • Power supply: If it fails, verify that the power source delivers 5 V and that the USB cable actually provides 5 V
  • Antenna orientation: point the antenna outward, otherwise no registration is possible
  • Version-specific: program-controlled on/off is only available on the newer HAT version; older versions only via button
  • US market: the source cites e.g. T-Mobile as a supported carrier – to be verified locally
