Summary

Technical guide for the Waveshare USB-to-RS232/485/TTL converter (B). Covers connection under Windows, Linux/Raspberry Pi, macOS and Android, describes driver installation (CDC/VCP), shows commands for device detection, and gives troubleshooting tips for RS485 and limits of simultaneous use of the interfaces.

Technical overview

  • The device supports operating systems Windows 7/8/8.1/10, Mac, Linux, Android and WinCE.
  • On Windows, the default active driver is the CDC driver; the manufacturer's VCP driver must be installed separately and becomes visible in Device Manager after installation.
  • On Linux or Raspberry Pi, the default driver can be used; the serial device name can be queried with 'ls /dev/tty*'.
  • To communicate with UART0, a command such as 'minicom -D /dev/ttyACM0' is entered.
  • On macOS, the appropriate driver must first be downloaded and installed; afterwards the serial debugging assistant can be opened.
  • The Android app is downloaded, extracted and installed; after launching the app, the device is detected via 'Scan Device' and parameters are set.
  • RS232, RS485 and TTL can all receive at the same time but cannot transmit simultaneously.
  • Direct conversion between RS232, RS485 and TTL is not supported; only conversion from USB into each of these interfaces is available.
  • For short-distance communication problems, remove the 120-ohm termination resistor on RS485; for long-distance problems, keep it connected.
  • A support ticket system is available for technical questions, with a response time of 1–2 working days, working hours 9:00–18:00 GMT+8 Mon–Fri.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

ls /dev/tty*
minicom -D /dev/ttyACM0
