Technical overview

  • Connects via the module’s pogo pins to TP3 (D+) and TP2 (D-) on the Raspberry Pi Pico.
  • Onboard high-precision DS3231 RTC chip with a backup battery holder for power retention.
  • Two SM16106 LED driver chips and one SM5166PLED control chip drive the 8 x 24 matrix LEDs.
  • Supports 12- or 24-hour display with an AM/PM indicator, plus two programmable alarms.
  • Automatic brightness adjustment uses the embedded photosensor to respond to ambient light.
  • The status bar indicates scroll mode, active alarm, countdown timer, Celsius/Fahrenheit, stopwatch, and hourly chime.
  • Three buttons allow switching configuration modes, adjusting values up/down, and exiting setup.
  • Operating voltage ranges from 3.3 V to 5 V; the backup battery accepts 2.3 V to 5.5 V.
  • Operating temperature range is -40 °C to +85 °C; standby current draw is approximately 100 nA.
  • Open-source demos are provided for C/C++, MicroPython, and Arduino development environments.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

wget -P ~/pico https://files.waveshare.com/upload/a/ab/Pico-Clock-Green.zip
cd ~/pico
unzip Pico-Clock-Green.zip
cd ~/pico/Pico-Clock-Green/build/
cmake ..
make
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/pico && sudo cp Pico-Clock-Green.uf2 /mnt/pico/ && sudo sync && sudo umount /mnt/pico && sleep 2

Notes and version constraints

  • Verify the exact MicroPython firmware version before flashing; the source only lists one sample filename.
  • When first connecting the Pico over USB, hold the BOOTSEL button until the device appears as a removable drive.
  • Modifying the demos requires editing the CMakeLists.txt and generating a new .uf2 file.
  • The countdown timer automatically triggers the buzzer when it expires; this may be disruptive in quiet settings.
  • If issues arise with the Arduino environment, a full uninstall and manual cleanup of the AppData folder may be necessary.
