Summary

Technical quick reference for the Waveshare UPS module that provides stable 5 V power to a Jetson Nano Developer Kit. Covers specifications, wiring, OLED display, commands, and safety practices.

Technical overview

  • The module outputs a constant 5 V with up to 2.5 A continuous current via an onboard regulator.
  • Communication uses the I²C bus; battery voltage, current, power, and remaining capacity are monitored in real time.
  • A 0.91-inch OLED displays information such as battery voltage, IP address, and RAM usage.
  • It supports 18650 lithium batteries (not included); four batteries provide a total capacity of 10400 mAh.
  • The charging port expects the included 8.4 V / 2 A charger.
  • A physical switch turns the Jetson Nano Developer Kit on or off.
  • Warning LEDs indicate reversed battery orientation; they stay off when batteries are mounted correctly.
  • Dimensions are 113 mm × 79 mm with 2.5 mm mounting holes.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo apt-get install python3-smbus -y
sudo apt-get install python-smbus -y
git clone https://github.com/waveshare/UPS-Power-Module
cd UPS-Power-Module
sudo ./install.sh
python3 -m ups_display.ina219
sudo python3 -m ups_display.display_server
sudo systemctl disable ups_display
sudo pip3 uninstall ups_display

Notes and version constraints

  • Batteries are not included; use only manufacturer-grade 18650 cells.
  • Use only the supplied 8.4 V / 2 A charger; other adapters may damage the module.
  • On first use, batteries must be activated by charging on board; the device may not work until then.
  • Lithium batteries have limited cycle life and should be replaced at max cycles or after two years, whichever comes first.
  • Wiring: connect 5 V to 5 V and 3.3 V to 3.3 V; incorrect mapping can destroy the Jetson Nano.
  • Negative current means discharge (battery powering the device); positive current means charging.
  • If the OLED does not display, run 'sudo python3 -m ups_display.display_server'; if it works, disable and reinstall the boot service.
  • When reconnecting the battery, keep the unit connected to the power supply so the switch responds.
  • Standby runtime is approximately 10–12 hours; other load profiles are untested.
  • Charging while powered off takes about four hours.
