Summary

The Pico e-Paper 2.9 (B) is a 2.9-inch E-Ink display module for the Raspberry Pi Pico with a resolution of 296×128 pixels and Black/White/Red colors. It is driven via an SPI interface.

Technical overview

  • Resolution: 296 × 128 pixels; dot pitch: 0.227 × 0.226 mm.
  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V / 5 V; the new driver board (V2.1 and later) supports both voltages.
  • SPI configuration: CPHL=0, CPOL=0 (SPI0); CS active low, DC=0 for command, DC=1 for data.
  • Refresh times: full refresh ~15 s, rapid refresh ~10 s, partial refresh (black/white) ~1.8 s.
  • Pixel definition: in monochrome images, bit 1 = white, bit 0 = black; 1 byte controls 8 pixels.
  • For three colors, two separate image data streams must be transmitted: one for black/white and one for red/white.
  • Pico pin mapping: DIN→GP11, CLK→GP10, CS→GP9, DC→GP8, RST→GP12, BUSY→GP13, VCC→VSYS, GND→GND.

Notes and version constraints

  • Partial updates must not be used continuously; after several partial updates, perform a full refresh once, otherwise the display may be irreparably damaged.
  • Do not leave the display powered on for extended periods; use sleep mode or power off when idle.
  • Recommended refresh interval: at least 180 seconds between refreshes and at least once every 24 hours.
  • Image data sent while in sleep mode is ignored; re-initialize before displaying again.
  • The FPC cable is fragile: bend it only horizontally, never vertically.
  • If image displays incorrectly, verify image size parameters first; border color is adjusted via register 0x3C or 0x50 (see datasheet for details).
