Summary

The SIM8200EA-M2 5G HAT is a Raspberry Pi add-on featuring a SIMCom SIM8200EA-M2 core module on the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 platform. It supports 5G Sub-6G, 4G LTE and 3G WCDMA across multiple bands, plus multi-constellation GNSS positioning (GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS). The board provides a USB3.1 port for AT commands, SMS, cloud communication and telephony via an onboard audio jack. It connects through the standard Raspberry Pi 40-pin GPIO header and requires a 5 V / 3 A power supply.

Notes and version constraints

  • NDIS dial-up is not supported on Raspbian systems dated on or after April 4, 2022; use the system's built-in driver instead.
  • When manual NDIS dial-up fails, a "No Carrier" response may indicate that a connection already exists – try accessing the internet directly.
  • Compatibility with other M.2 modules must be verified by actual testing; modules without USB function (PCIe-only) are not supported.
  • IPEX-4 connectors are fragile; when removing them, wiggle gently side-to-side and pull out evenly to avoid damage.
  • Fan noise increasing after prolonged operation is normal (lubricant evaporation in the rolling bearing) and does not indicate a fault.
  • When using with other boards: ensure pin compatibility and verify through actual testing.
  • Version-sensitive step: the ffmpeg live-streaming workflow depends on the exact Raspberry Pi OS image date (e.g., 2020-08-20-raspios-buster-armhf ships with ffmpeg pre-installed).
  • If the IP cannot be obtained or networking fails: run sudo dhclient -v wwan0 and sudo route add -net 0.0.0.0 wwan0.
