Technical overview

  • Sensor: IMX219 (official Raspberry Pi camera), supported on all Raspberry Pi boards via libcamera/Raspicam drivers.
  • CSI connector: On Pi 5 it sits between the audio jack and HDMI; on Pi Zero next to power; orient the FPC cable's metal side toward the network port (Pi 5) or downward (Zero).
  • System update: For current modules such as Camera Module 3, run 'sudo apt-get update -y' then 'sudo apt-get upgrade -y'.
  • Config file: For non-official cameras set 'camera_auto_detect=0' in /boot/config.txt (or /boot/firmware/config.txt on Bookworm) and add a dtoverlay line, e.g. 'dtoverlay=imx219'.
  • Binocular setup: CM4 carrier boards and Pi 5 can connect two cameras simultaneously; assign them with 'cam0' and 'cam1', e.g. 'dtoverlay=imx219,cam0' and 'dtoverlay=ov5647,cam1'.
  • Start preview: 'sudo libcamera-hello -t 0' opens a preview window; close via Alt+F4 or Ctrl+C in the terminal.
  • Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm moves default capture apps from libcamera-* to rpicam-*; rpicam-apps are preinstalled and auto-detect official cameras.
  • rpicam-jpeg captures still images: 'rpicam-jpeg -o test.jpg'; resolution adjustable with '--width' and '--height'.
  • Exposure control: Fixed shutter and gain via '--shutter' and '--gain'; brightness compensation via '--ev'.
  • NoIR tuning: Without an IR filter the camera needs different AWB settings; specify the matching tuning file with '--tuning-file', e.g. '/usr/share/libcamera/ipa/rpi/vc4/imx219_noir.json' (Pi 4 or earlier) or '/usr/share/libcamera/ipa/rpi/pisp/imx219_noir.json' (Pi 5).

Notes and version constraints

  • The exact infrared band of the RPi NoIR Camera V2 is not fully specified in the source; only 850 nm is mentioned. Verify before use.
  • The source contains placeholder tokens ('{{{name2}}}' etc.), indicating incomplete templates; verify technical details against original documentation.
  • The migration from libcamera-* to rpicam-* is version-dependent; older systems (e.g., Bullseye) require different commands.
  • IMX290 configuration on Pi 5 requires downloading an additional JSON file from an external link; this needs network access and manual confirmation.
  • Binocular operation is available only on certain boards (CM4 carrier, Pi 5); compatibility with other boards is not guaranteed.
  • Preview testing requires a connected HDMI or DIS display; without a monitor the camera cannot be visually tested.
