Summary

Concise technical introduction to the Waveshare 0.95-inch RGB OLED (A) module: SPI interface, SSD1331 driver, 96×64 resolution and connection to Raspberry Pi, STM32 and Arduino.

Technical overview

  • Display type: active-matrix OLED with RGB color output (approx. 65K colors).
  • Resolution: 96 × 64 pixels; module dimensions approx. 31.7 × 37 mm.
  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V or 5 V; communication over a four-wire SPI interface.
  • Driver chip: SSD1331; module pinout includes VCC, GND, DIN, CLK, CS, D/C and RES.
  • Raspberry Pi connection via a 7-pin cable: VCC→3.3V, GND→GND, DIN→MOSI/SDA (BCM 19 / pin 3), CLK→SCLK/SCL (BCM 23 / pin 5), CS→CE0 (BCM 24), DC→pin 22, RST→pin 13.
  • Before use, the SPI interface must be enabled in the Raspberry Pi (raspi-config → Interfacing Options → SPI → Yes), followed by a reboot.
  • On the Bookworm operating system only the lgpio library is available; BCM2835 and WiringPi cannot be installed there.
  • The test demo code is downloaded and extracted; for this module the C command is “sudo ./main 0.95rgb” and the Python command is “sudo python3 OLED_0in95_rgb_test.py”.
  • In the C code the Dev library is used by default; switching to BCM2835 or WiringPi is done by editing the Makefile (lines 13–15) and toggling between SPI and I2C via the USE_SPI_4W / USE_IIC macros.
  • For STM32 and Arduino, separate hardware wiring tables, demo run commands and software descriptions are provided; the exact steps are platform-specific and require manual confirmation.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo raspi-config
sudo reboot

tar zxvf bcm2835-1.71.tar.gz
cd bcm2835-1.71/
sudo ./configure && sudo make && sudo make check && sudo make install
sudo apt-get install wiringpi
wget https://project-downloads.drogon.net/wiringpi-latest.deb
sudo dpkg -i wiringpi-latest.deb
gpio -v
git clone https://github.com/WiringPi/WiringPi
cd WiringPi
./build
wget https://github.com/joan2937/lg/archive/master.zip
unzip master.zip
cd lg-master
sudo make install
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install python3-pip
sudo apt-get install python3-pil

Notes and version constraints

  • The source contains placeholders such as {{{name2}}} through {{{name6}}}, {{{userDefinedInfo}}} and {{{userdefinedvalue}}}; these values are missing and must be completed before publication.
  • The exact hardware connections and demo commands for STM32 and Arduino are truncated in the supplied source; they require manual verification against the full manual.
  • Current-draw figures (e.g. ~38 mA at full-white display) apply to 3.3 V operation; other voltages or firmware versions may yield different values.
  • Continuously displaying the same image can create afterimages and damage the OLED; treat this as a warning.
  • Reverse polarity of the power supply can damage the module; verify correct polarity before connecting.
  • Library selection (Dev vs. BCM2835 vs. WiringPi) and switching between SPI and I2C are version- and OS-dependent and should be confirmed before execution.
