Technical overview

  • The sound card uses the SSS1629A5 codec with a built-in microphone and a 4-ohm speaker connection via PH2.0.
  • Operating voltage is 5 V; the card is driver-free and is auto-detected as a USB device.
  • Speaker drive capability: 2.6 W per channel at 4 ohms BTL.
  • On Raspberry Pi, select the device in the audio settings; playback and recording use the USB PnP Audio device.
  • On Jetson Nano, choose the device via the speaker/microphone icon in the top right; sliders can be adjusted by dragging.
  • On PC, the card appears under Control Panel > Hardware and Sound as a USB microphone and speaker.
  • For Horizon Sunrise X3 PI, list devices with lsusb, output devices with aplay -l, input devices with arecord -l; adjust volume with sudo alsamixer.
  • Recording example: arecord -Dhw:0,0 -f S16_LE -r16000 -c2 -d 10 -t wav sound_16b_16k.wav; playback: aplay -Dhw:0,0 -f S16_LE -r16000 -t wav sound_16b_16k.wav.
  • For VisionFive2, install usbutils and alsa-utils first; then use the same ALSA commands as on Horizon Sunrise X3 PI.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

lsusb
aplay -l
arecord -l
sudo alsamixer
arecord -d 10 test.wav
aplay test.wav
arecord -Dhw:0,0 -f S16_LE -r16000 -c2 -d 10 -t wav sound_16b_16k.wav
aplay -Dhw:0,0 -f S16_LE -r16000 -t wav sound_16b_16k.wav
apt install usbutils
apt install alsa-utils

Notes and version constraints

  • The exact device position (e.g., hw:0,0) must be read from the output of aplay -l / arecord -l; examples assume specific positions.
  • When testing on PC, keep the speaker away from the module to avoid echo.
  • If volume is low or there is no sound, a screw inside the case may need adjustment – the exact location must be confirmed visually.
  • On Jetson Nano, the microphone slider may be missing depending on system version; this requires manual check in settings.
  • Microphone performance depends on ambient noise level; external microphones are not supported.
