Summary

A concise technical reference for the Waveshare 0.96inch OLED (B) module with an SSD1306 driver chip. It covers specifications, pinout, interface configuration (SPI/I2C), and connection to Raspberry Pi, STM32, and Arduino.

Technical overview

  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V / 5 V; Driver chip: SSD1306; Resolution: 128 × 64 pixels; Display size: 0.96 inch.
  • Available interfaces: 3-wire SPI, 4-wire SPI, and I2C. Mode selection is done via two resistors (BS0/BS1) on the back of the module.
  • Default configuration: 4-wire SPI (BS0=0, BS1=0). For 3-wire SPI: BS0=1, BS1=0. For I2C: BS0=0, BS1=1.
  • In I2C mode, the DC signal determines the slave address; when connected to GND, the 7-bit I2C address is 0x3C.
  • Raspberry Pi connection via a 7-pin cable: VCC→3.3 V, GND→GND, DIN→MOSI/SDA (BCM19/3), CLK→SCLK/SCL (BCM23/5), CS→CE0 (BCM24), DC→BCM25 (board pin 22), RES→BCM27 (board pin 13).
  • For Raspberry Pi operation, SPI or I2C must be enabled via raspi-config and the system rebooted.
  • On Bookworm, only the lgpio library can be used; bcm2835 and WiringPi cannot be installed there.
  • The C demo is compiled in the c directory (make clean, make -j 8) and run with sudo ./main 0.96 for this module.
  • The Python demo is run from the python/example directory with sudo python3 OLED_0in96_test.py.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo raspi-config
sudo reboot
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install python3-pip
sudo apt-get install python3-pil
sudo apt-get install python3-numpy
sudo pip3 install spidev
sudo apt-get install python3-smbus
sudo wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/2/2c/OLED_Module_Code.7z
7z x OLED_Module_Code.7z
cd OLED_Module_Code/RaspberryPi/c
sudo make clean
sudo make -j 8
sudo ./main 0.96
cd python/example
sudo python3 OLED_0in96_test.py

Notes and version constraints

  • The exact solder positions of the BS0/BS1 resistors depend on the physical PCB; please verify the exact position using the original documentation before the soldering step.
  • The current values (approx. 25 mA at full display, 1.5 mA when off) apply only under 3.3 V operation and may vary depending on firmware version.
  • The module does not light up simply by connecting VCC/GND; program control is required to turn on the display.
  • Continuously displaying the same image can cause burn-in effects; regular switching or blanking is recommended.
  • Forward/reverse polarity of the supply must be observed; reversed polarity can damage the module.
  • Compatibility with certain Raspberry Pi firmware versions (e.g., Bookworm) requires using lgpio; other libraries are unavailable.
