Summary

The universal e-Paper driver HAT connects Waveshare SPI e-Paper raw panels to Raspberry Pi, Jetson Nano, STM32 or Arduino via a 40-pin GPIO header. The current Rev2.3 uses a PWR pin for power control and an RST pin only for reset.

Technical overview

  • Based on the 40-pin Raspberry Pi GPIO header; also supports Jetson Nano and other boards
  • Communication over 3-wire SPI and 4-wire SPI; onboard voltage converter compatible with 3.3 V/5 V logic levels
  • Dimensions: 65 mm × 30.2 mm; mounting hole 3.0 mm
  • Rev2.3: new PWR pin for power on/off, RST now only for reset; smaller inductor package; PH2.0 8-pin connector replaced by GH1.25 9-pin
  • Display configuration via resistor switch: 0.47 Ω (B) for larger panels (e.g. 2.13" D, 2.7", 2.9" D, 4.01" F, 4.2" C, 5.65" F, 5.83", 7.5"), 3 Ω (A) for smaller panels (e.g. 1.54", 2.13", 2.66", 2.9", 3.7", 4.2", 13.3")
  • If the display is abnormal, flip the switch to the other position
  • Raspberry Pi connection: plug directly onto the 40-PIN header or connect via a 9-PIN cable using the pin mapping table
  • Raspberry Pi pin mapping: VCC→3.3V, GND→GND, DIN→MOSI(19), CLK→SCLK(23), CS→CE0(24), DC→22, RST→11, BUSY→18, PWR→12
  • STM32 connection via 9-PIN cable: DIN→PA7, CLK→PA5, CS→PA4, DC→PA2, RST→PA1, BUSY→PA3, PWR→PA6
  • Arduino UNO: DIN→D11, CLK→D13, CS→D10, DC→D9, RST→D8, BUSY→D7; Mega2560: DIN→D51, CLK→D52, CS→D10, DC→D9, RST→D8, BUSY→D6

Commands and examples – verify before use:

ls /dev/spi*

Notes and version constraints

  • The source contains placeholders such as {{{name2}}} and {{{userDefinedInfo}}}; these values are unavailable and must be filled in manually.
  • Exact compatibility with a given panel depends on setting the resistor switch correctly – if malfunction occurs, the switch must be flipped.
  • Modifying SPI settings in /boot/config.txt and epdconfig.py is version-dependent and requires manual confirmation.
  • When changing stack/heap sizes in the STM32 startup file for models other than F103ZET6, adjustments are needed.
  • Color variation in tri-color panels is normal; storing displays face-up reduces discoloration.
