Summary

The Pico e-Paper 2.13 (B) is a 2.13-inch E-Ink module with 250x122 pixels and Black/White/Red colors. It connects to a Raspberry Pi Pico via SPI and requires 3.3V operating voltage.

Technical overview

  • Resolution: 250 x 122 pixels; colors: Black, White, Red; greyscale levels: 2
  • Operating voltage: 3.3V; interface: SPI; full refresh time: approx. 15s
  • Pico pin mapping: DIN→GP11, CLK→GP10, CS→GP9, DC→GP8, RST→GP12, BUSY→GP13, VCC→VSYS, GND→GND
  • Pixel definition: 1 bit per pixel; 1 byte controls 8 pixels; MSB format is used
  • For tri-color display, two separate image buffers are required: one black/white image and one red/white image, each using 1 byte per 8 pixels
  • SPI configuration: CPHL=0, CPOL=0 (SPI0); CS low enables the chip; DC=0 for commands, DC=1 for data
  • FPC connector on raw panel: 0.5mm pitch, 24-pin
  • Storage note: clear the screen before long-term storage and store it facing up

Notes and version constraints

  • Partial refresh must not be used continuously; after several partial refreshes a full refresh is required, otherwise the display behavior can be irreparably disturbed
  • Tri-color EPD shows slight color differences between batches; clear the screen content multiple times before powering on
  • Do not leave the screen powered on indefinitely; set it to sleep mode or power off when not refreshing, otherwise the screen remains under high voltage and can be damaged
  • Recommended refresh interval: at least 180s between refreshes and at least once every 24 hours
  • After entering sleep mode, sent image data is ignored; re-initialization is required
  • Border color adjustable via register 0x3C or 0x50 (see datasheet for details)
  • Raw panel may require a level converter for 5V environments; newer driver boards (from V2.1) support both 3.3V and 5V
  • FPC cable is fragile: bend only horizontally, not vertically; protect the screen from drops, impacts and hard pressure
