Summary

The Photo Interrupter Sensor is a light-interruption sensor used for speed measurement, e.g., in smart cars. It uses a WYC-H206 slot photoelectric sensor with an infrared emitter and receiver plus a Schmitt trigger for stable signals.

Technical overview

  • Principle: An infrared transmitter and receiver form a slot; when the beam is interrupted, the receiver output goes low through an inverting Schmitt trigger.
  • Power supply: 3.3 V to 5 V (VCC).
  • Dimensions: 26.8 mm × 15 mm × 18.7 mm; mounting hole diameter 3 mm; gap width 6 mm.
  • Pinout: DOUT = digital data output, GND = power ground, VCC = 3.3–5 V supply.
  • Pico connection: VCC to 3.3 V, GND to GND, DOUT to GP22.
  • STM32 connection (example on STM32F103RB): VCC to 3.3 V, GND to GND, DOUT to PA4.
  • Arduino UNO connection: VCC to 5 V, GND to GND, DOUT to D2.
  • Expected behavior: When blocked by an object, the signal LED turns on and the serial port prints “ON”; otherwise the LED stays off and the serial port prints “OFF”.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo apt-get install p7zip-full
cd ~
sudo wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/f/f6/Photo_Interrupter_Sensor_Demo.7z
7z x Photo_Interrupter_Sensor_Demo.7z -o./Photo_Interrupter_Sensor_Demo
cd ~/Photo_Interrupter_Sensor_Demo
cd Pico/c/build/
export PICO_SDK_PATH=../../pico-sdk
cmake ..
make -j9
cp main.uf2 /media/pi/RPI-RP2/

Notes and version constraints

  • The provided sample demos are tied to specific boards (e.g., STM32F103RB, Arduino UNO); other boards may require modified connections and possibly custom porting.
  • Firmware versions can affect script behavior; using the supplied MicroPython firmware is recommended.
  • Speed-measurement accuracy depends on slot geometry (6 mm gap) and sampling rate; no further measurement values are given in the source text.
  • No information on certifications, warranty or safety notes is present – clarify separately before product integration.
