Summary

Technical overview of the 5.83-inch E-Ink display module for Raspberry Pi Pico (648×480, Black/White, SPI).

Technical overview

  • Resolution: 648 × 480 pixels; greyscale levels: 2 (black/white)
  • Interface: SPI (CPHL=0, CPOL=0, i.e. SPI mode 0); no MISO line required
  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V; standby current < 0.01 µA; refresh power ≈ 26.4 mW (typ.)
  • Full refresh takes about 5 s; flickering during global refresh is a normal phenomenon
  • Pico/Pico2 wiring via 8-pin cable: VCC→VSYS, GND→GND, DIN→GP11 (MOSI), CLK→GP10 (SCK), CS→GP9, DC→GP8, RST→GP12, BUSY→GP13
  • Pixel data format: 4 bits per pixel; 0000b = black, 0011b = white; other values lead to uncertain color
  • Example bytes: 0x00 → ■■, 0x03 → ■□, 0x30 → □■, 0x33 → □□
  • The driver board provides two user buttons and one reset button

unzip Pico_ePaper_Code.zip -d Pico_ePaper_Code
git clone https://github.com/waveshare/Pico_ePaper_Code.git
cmake -DPICO_BOARD=pico -DPICO_PLATFORM=rp2040 ..
cmake -DPICO_BOARD=pico2 -DPICO_PLATFORM=rp2350 ..
make -j9
cp epd.uf2 /media/pi/RPI-RP2/
cp epd.uf2 /media/pi/RP2350

Notes and version constraints

  • Refresh time and power figures are experimental test data; real-world values may differ
  • The e-paper cannot be refreshed directly under sunlight
  • After deep sleep, the display must be re-initialized via software
  • If the program hangs on busy state: check wiring and SPI settings (baud rate, mode)
  • Version-sensitive steps: demo code requires editing main.c according to the actual display type
  • MicroPython firmware files listed (Pico: rp2-pico-20210418-v1.15.uf2; Pico 2: rp2-pcio2-20240809-v1.24.0.uf2) – versions may change over time
  • Commands assume a Linux environment (Raspberry Pi OS); adapt them for other systems
