Summary

Concise technical reference for the 2-channel RS485 module (SP3485) for Raspberry Pi Pico. It covers specifications, pin mapping, wiring, environment setup, and example code usage.

Technical overview

  • The module provides two independent UART-to-RS485 channels using SP3485 transceivers.
  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V via the Pico's VSYS pin.
  • Each channel uses dedicated GP pins: Channel 0 uses GP0/GP1, Channel 1 uses GP4/GP5.
  • Baud rate is configurable from 300 to 500,000 bps.
  • Module dimensions: 52.5 mm × 21 mm.
  • Onboard TVS protection guards against surge and transient voltages on the RS485 bus lines.
  • Connection is made through the standard Pico header; observe polarity (align USB-side markings).
  • Example projects in C/C++ and MicroPython are included with the package.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo apt-get install p7zip-full
cd ~
sudo wget https://files.waveshare.com/upload/9/94/Pico_2CH_RS485.7z
7z x Pico_2CH_RS485.7z -o./Pico_2CH_RS485
cd ~/Pico_2CH_RS485/c/build/
export PICO_SDK_PATH=../../pico-sdk
cmake ..
make -j9
cp main.uf2 /media/pi/RPI-RP2/
sudo apt upgrade thonny

Notes and version constraints

  • The exact firmware version for Pico 2 or RP2350 may vary by package; select the correct .uf2 file before flashing.
  • For first-time Arduino IDE uploads, the UF2 board must be selected first; a COM port then appears afterward.
  • Thonny must be at least version 3.3.3 to support Pico; older versions do not recognize the device.
  • If Arduino IDE installation issues occur: complete uninstallation and manual deletion of the AppData folder is required.
  • RS485 bus wiring (A/B polarity) is not detailed in the source; external bus configuration requires additional verification.
