Technical overview

  • Resolution 1200 × 825 pixels on a 9.7-inch diagonal
  • Operating voltage 5 V; interfaces USB/SPI/I80/I2C
  • Viewing angle greater than 170°; operating temperature 0–50 °C
  • Full refresh under 1 s; typical refresh power draw 0.6 W
  • No backlight required; last displayed content persists after power-off
  • Connects to the Raspberry Pi 40-pin GPIO header via SPI
  • For Raspberry Pi: enable SPI, install libraries, compile demo code
  • For STM32: choose SPI or I80 depending on pin availability
  • FPC is fragile – reinforcing it with tape during development is recommended
  • Connect all cables before applying power

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo raspi-config
sudo nano /boot/config.txt
sudo make clean && sudo make -j4
make -j4 LIB=LGPIO
make -j4 LIB=GPIOD
sudo ./epd -1.50 0

Notes and version constraints

  • The device does not support hot-plug; verify all connections before powering on
  • The FPC is fragile; additional reinforcement is recommended
  • Developing over USB on Windows requires an NDA with the Waveshare team; currently unavailable for individual users
  • Displaying the same image for extended periods can cause irreversible burn-in; refresh at least every 24 hours
  • Direct sunlight dries out the charged particles – this damage is irreversible
  • After deep-sleep mode, the software must re-initialize the display
  • The VCOM value printed on the FPC must be passed as a parameter
