Summary

The ST-LINK/V2 (mini) is a compact in-circuit debugger and programmer for STM8 and STM32 microcontrollers. It communicates via the SWIM and SWD interfaces and connects to a PC over USB.

Technical overview

  • Interfaces: The target board uses SWIM and SWD; pins PA13/PA14 serve as the SWD programming pins.
  • Connection order: Connect the ST-LINK/V2 (mini) to the PC first, then to the target board, because USB detection happens at power-up.
  • Error state: If the red LED blinks continuously, the device is in an error state; unplug the USB cable or power supply and reconnect.
  • Target board without power: If the target does not power the ST-LINK, short-circuit pins 2 and 19 to supply power to it.
  • Keil error "illegal address (0x08000000)": Uncheck "Download to Flash" in Options for Target → Debug → Settings → Debug → Download Options.
  • Keil version: For recognition failures, ensure the Keil version is at least 5.25.
  • STVP software: Download from ST's official site; after agreeing, enter name and email, then follow the emailed link to download.
  • ST-LINK firmware issue: Recurring connection errors can be resolved by upgrading the firmware with the ST-link upgrade utility.

Notes and version constraints

  • The exact Keil version requirement (min. 5.25) is version-sensitive; older or newer builds may behave differently.
  • Short-circuiting pins 2 and 19 for power is a fallback workaround and should only be used when the target board does not power the ST-LINK.
  • Holding the RESET button while clicking Program/Emulation is a manual step that depends on the specific target board.
  • Chip-recognition failures may also be caused by faulty USB ports or cables; this requires physical inspection.
  • Downloading STVP requires an email confirmation; the exact flow may change with updates to ST's website.
