Summary

The Waveshare Compute Module 4 PoE Board is an IO breakout board for developing with or integrating the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (all CM4 variants). It provides PoE power over Gigabit Ethernet, four USB 3.2 Gen1 ports, dual HDMI, two MIPI CSI camera connectors, two MIPI DSI display connectors, a CR2032 RTC battery holder, a PWM fan header with 5 V/12 V selection, and a 40-pin GPIO header for HATs.

Technical overview

  • Compatible with all variants of the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4/CM4L).
  • PoE: Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 supporting the 802.3af standard; the connected switch must support PoE.
  • DC input: wide voltage range of 7–36 V DC; a supply of at least 24 W is recommended.
  • Four USB 3.2 Gen1 ports are onboard by default.
  • Dual HDMI ports enable dual 4K@30fps output; only one can be active simultaneously by default.
  • Two MIPI CSI connectors for cameras; single cameras work only on the CAM0 port.
  • Two MIPI DSI connectors for displays; default resolution 800×480 on newer systems (Bookworm).
  • RTC chip PCF85063A sits on I2C-10 at address 0x51; requires a CR2032 battery in the holder.
  • Fan driver EMC2301 also on I2C-10 at address 0x2f; supports PWM fans.
  • Jumpers select between 5 V and 12 V for the fan; default is 5 V.
  • 40-pin GPIO header for connecting Raspberry Pi HATs.
  • The two DISP connectors cannot be used together by default.
  • Micro USB serves as a USB slave port for writing to eMMC, not as OTG.
  • No hot-plugging allowed except for USB and HDMI.
  • For PoE operation, set the jumper to EN.
  • When using RTC, DSI and CSI must remain disabled.
  • Kernel version ≥ 6.1.31 is required for the fan driver (check with uname -a).

Commands and examples – verify before use:

sudo nano /boot/config.txt
dtparam=i2c_vc=on
dtoverlay=i2c-rtc,pcf85063a,i2c_csi_dsi
#dtparam=audio=on
sudo reboot
sudo hwclock -w
sudo hwclock -s
sudo hwclock --set --date="9/8/2021 16:45:05"
sudo hwclock -r
sudo hwclock --verbose
uname -a
dtoverlay=i2c-fan,emc2301,i2c_csi_dsi,midtemp=45000,maxtemp=65000
i2cdetect -y 10
libcamera-hello --list-cameras
libcamera-hello -t 0
libcamera-jpeg -o test.jpg
libcamera-vid -t 10000 -o test.h264
sudo raspivid -t 0 -cs 0
sudo raspivid -t 0 -cs 1

Notes and version constraints

  • Hot-plugging devices (other than USB/HDMI) may damage hardware.
  • The fan must be connected before powering on; connecting it afterwards may damage the driver chip.
  • Verify the fan's rated voltage matches the selected jumper setting before connecting.
  • PoE operation requires a compatible switch (802.3af); without one, power delivery will not work.
  • Exact compatibility of specific cameras or displays depends on the exact model and is not specified here.
  • Changes to config.txt require a reboot to take effect.
  • If RTC misbehaves, check that the battery is properly seated and charged.
  • Kernel versions below 6.1.31 do not support the EMC2301 fan driver.
  • Using DSI disables HDMI output by default, even when no DSI display is connected.
