Summary

The 7-inch IPS display with resistive touch and 1024×600 resolution connects to a Raspberry Pi via HDMI. The guide covers hardware connection, system images, touch calibration, and rotation on Bookworm, Bullseye/Kali, and Ubuntu.

Technical overview

  • 7-inch IPS panel with a fixed hardware resolution of 1024 × 600 pixels.
  • Resistive touch panel; the touch function requires GPIO connections while video output is over HDMI.
  • Compatible with all Raspberry Pi revisions; Zero and Zero 2 W require an additional HDMI cable.
  • Supports Raspberry Pi OS (Bookworm), Ubuntu, Kali, and RetroPie; on other systems it can be used as a regular HDMI monitor, in which case touch is unavailable.
  • Hardware connection: align the 26-pin ribbon connector with the Pi's 40 GPIO pins and connect the HDMI cable between the Pi and the display.
  • For configuration files, add the output lines hdmi_group=2, hdmi_mode=87, and hdmi_cvt 1024 600 60 6 0 0 0 to /boot/config.txt (or /boot/firmware/config.txt on newer systems).
  • Additionally, enable the waveshare-ads7846 device-tree overlay with parameters penirq=25, xmin=3900, xmax=200, ymin=200, ymax=3900, speed=50000, swapxy.
  • File names and paths may vary by OS version; calibration requires measuring actual boundary values using evtest.
  • Rotation on Bookworm is done through the screen configuration app or Wayfire settings; older X-based systems use xrandr -o or display_rotate in config.txt.
  • When used as a plain monitor without touch, rotation must be controlled through the desktop environment or kernel parameters.

Commands and examples – verify before use:

hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=87
hdmi_cvt 1024 600 60 6 0 0 0
dtoverlay=waveshare-ads7846,penirq=25,xmin=3900,xmax=200,ymin=200,ymax=3900,speed=50000,swapxy
sudo apt-get install evtest
sudo evtest
sudo nano /boot/firmware/config.txt
dtoverlay=waveshare-ads7846,x_min=164,x_max=4010,y_min=154,y_max=3758
sudo reboot
xrandr -o 1
display_rotate=3
fbcon=rotate:0 video=HDMI-A-1:1024x600M@60,rotate=0
disable_splash=1

Notes and version constraints

  • The exact paths for config.txt and overlays differ across Raspberry Pi OS versions; verify the current directory structure before editing.
  • The calibration values given are example measurements from one specific device; your own boundary values must be determined with evtest.
  • Axis swapping (swapxy) and the pen IRQ number are device-specific; changes may disrupt touch functionality.
  • The rotation commands apply only to the listed operating-system variants; other distributions may require different mechanisms.
  • The source contains placeholders and incomplete sections; missing details require manual confirmation by a technician.
