Summary

The Waveshare USB-CAN-A is a USB-to-CAN adapter based on an STM32 chip. It supports CAN 2.0A/2.0B, four operating modes, and configurable baud rates from 5 kbps to 1 Mbps. The default serial port baud rate is 2 Mbit/s.

Technical overview

  • Supports CAN 2.0A (standard frame) and CAN 2.0B (extended frame).
  • CAN baud rate range: 5 kbps to 1 Mbps; the serial port baud rate defaults to 2 Mbit/s.
  • Four operating modes: normal mode, loopback mode, silent mode, and silent loopback mode.
  • Various transmission methods: single-frame, multi-frame, manual transmission, timed transmission, and cyclic transmission.
  • Reception options: receive only data with specified IDs or configure IDs to automatically respond with predefined data.
  • Data can be saved as TXT or EXCEL files.
  • Onboard TVS suppresses surge voltage and transient spikes in the circuit.
  • Configuration can be set via software or serial commands and persists after power-off.
  • Both Chinese and English versions of the Windows host software are provided.
  • CH341SER driver is used for installation; the configuration tool requires no installation and runs directly after unzipping.

Notes and version constraints

  • No Python-specific demos are available; communication happens via serial commands or the supplied tool.
  • The exact mapping between LED flash sequences and baud rates must be verified before changing the COM baud rate.
  • If receiving fails while sending works, check the filter ID setting (set to 0x00000000 to accept all IDs).
  • Whether GND connections are required depends on the application environment; a GND connection is recommended for long cables (>1 m), different power sources, or noisy environments.
  • Version-specific details of the configuration tool (currently version 2.12) must be verified before use.
