== Summary ==
The MLX90640-D55 is a 32×24-pixel infrared array thermal imaging camera with a 55° horizontal field of view and an I2C interface. It is accessed over I2C (default address 0x33) and supports 3.3 V or 5 V operating voltages.

== Technical overview ==
* Resolution: 32 × 24 pixels, 768 IR sensors in total (thermopile).
* Field of view: 55° horizontal, 35° vertical; designed for distance measurement.
* I2C bus: default device address 0x33; the bus supports fast mode up to 1 MHz.
* Operating voltage: 3.3 V or 5 V; onboard level shifter allows direct connection to a 5 V I2C bus.
* Operating current: less than 23 mA.
* Operating temperature range: −40 °C to +85 °C.
* Target temperature range: −40 °C to +300 °C; resolution ±1 °C.
* Refresh rate: programmable between 0.5 Hz and 64 Hz; controlled via control register 1 (0x800D), bits 7–9 select the rate, bit 12 selects chessboard or TV interleave mode.
* Dimensions: 28 mm × 16 mm; mounting hole 2.0 mm diameter.
* Applications: non-contact temperature measurement, industrial temperature control, motion detection.

== Notes and version constraints ==
* The manufacturer allows up to four defective pixels out of the factory; these are marked in the EEPROM. Defective pixels are not grounds for return or exchange; using the average value of adjacent pixels is recommended as a substitute.
* The source does not provide exact measurement-distance values; the stated test figures (e.g., contour recognition up to about 5 m for D55) come from internal Waveshare tests under defined conditions (room temperature 22 °C, dim light, 178 cm tall person).
* The IR wavelength range is given as 5.5–14 µm; specific calibration parameters and emissivity settings must be adjusted according to target material.
* Examples for Raspberry Pi, ESP32 and STM32 are mentioned, but the concrete code snippets are missing from the provided source; integration therefore requires additional documentation.
* The maximum frame rate is stated as 32 Hz in the FAQ, while the specification allows up to 64 Hz – please verify which figure applies to your project.
