== Summary ==
The 8-inch DSI LCD from Waveshare is a capacitive touch display with 800×480 resolution and 5-point touch. It is driven directly by the Raspberry Pi's DSI interface, supports up to 60 Hz refresh rate, and works on several Pi models without additional drivers.
== Technical overview ==
* Resolution: 800 × 480 pixels; capacitive touch panel with 5-point detection and toughened glass (hardness 6H).
* Interface: 15-pin DSI connector for older Pi models (Pi 4B/3B+/3A+/3B/2B/B+/A+); 22-pin DSI1 connector for newer models (Pi 5/CM4/CM3+/CM3).
* Compatibility: Works with Raspberry Pi OS, Ubuntu, Kali, Volumio and Retropie without extra drivers; also supports VisionFive 2 (Debian), Tinker Board 2 (Linux/Android) and Core3566 (Debian/Ubuntu).
* Backlight brightness controllable via terminal through /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness (range 0–255).
* Display rotation: Via GUI in Trixie/Bookworm or via cmdline.txt (video=DSI-1:800x480M@60,rotate=90/180/270) in Lite versions.
* Touch rotation in older systems (Bullseye/Buster) must be configured separately via X11 settings (CalibrationMatrix in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-libinput.conf).
* DSI overlay in config.txt: dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-7inch for DSI1; dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-7inch,dsi0 only on Pi 5/CM4 for DSI0.
* Pre-installed image: After entering the correct dtoverlay value in config.txt, safely eject the SD card and reboot the device.
* Brightness setting via GUI: In Trixie through Control Center → Screens → DSI-2 → Brightness; in Bookworm under Screen Configuration → Screen.
* Additional hardware features: VCOM voltage adjustment resistor, pogo-pin power supply, two 5V outputs for fans etc., reversed camera hole on the touch panel.

== Notes and version constraints ==
* The DSI0 overlay (dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-7inch,dsi0) applies only to Pi 5/CM4; it cannot be used on other models.
* For the Bookworm system on Raspberry Pi 5, it is recommended to manually update to the latest system version before booting (network connection required): sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get full-upgrade -y, then sudo reboot.
* On Bullseye/Buster, after rotating the display, touch rotation must be configured separately via X11 settings; synchronized GUI rotation is only available in Trixie/Bookworm.
* The screen-sleep command xset dpms force off works only on Bullseye and Buster according to the source.
* Changes to config.txt or cmdline.txt require a reboot to take effect.
* The exact compatibility list for other boards (VisionFive 2, Tinker Board 2, Core3566) is based solely on the source file; independent testing is recommended for confirmation.
* The display brightness is listed as 300 cd/m² in the FAQ; this is a manufacturer claim and should be verified for your own applications.
